Subspecies
Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Tooth-billed Wren (Odontorchilus cinereus), but the two differ significantly in song and habitat.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
minor (Hartert, 1900) - Western Andes of southern Colombia and extreme northern Ecuador.
branickii (Taczanowski & Berlepsch, 1885) - Eastern Andes of southern Colombia (southern from western Caqueta) and eastern Ecuador southern on both slopes to western Bolivia.
