Subspecies
Andean Slaty-Thrush (Turdus nigriceps) and Eastern Slaty Thrush (Turdus subalaris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Turdus nigriceps following SACC (2005).
Subspecies subalaris often treated as a separate species on basis of morphological and vocal differences, although these relatively minor. Males of nominate subspecies tend to vary clinally in plumage from north to south.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nigriceps Cabanis, 1874 - Breeds Andes of south-western Ecuador (Loja) and north-western Peru (Piura) and from central Bolivia south to central Argentina. Non-breeding also southern Ecuador south to Bolivia.
subalaris (Seebohm, 1887) - Breeds southernmost Brazil (north to Paraná), north-eastern Argentina, and south-eastern Paraguay. Winters north to south central Brazil (north to Mato Grosso and Goiás). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Slaty Thrush (Turdus subalaris).
