Subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland. From 950 - 1,800 m.
Argentina, Chile.
Central Chile from southern Atacama to Bío Bío.

Scytalopus magellanicus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Magellanic Tapaculo (Scytalopus magellanicus ), Rufous-rumped Tapaculo (Scytalopus griseicollis ), Lara Tapaculo (Scytalopus fuscicauda ), Elfin Forest Tapaculo (Scytalopus altirostris ), Ancash Tapaculo (Scytalopus affinis ), Sharp-billed Tapaculo (Scytalopus acutirostris ), Cuzco Tapaculo (Scytalopus urubambae ), Andean Tapaculo (Scytalopus simonsi ), Zimmer's Tapaculo (Scytalopus zimmeri ), Dusky Tapaculo (Scytalopus fuscus ) and Páramo Tapaculo (Scytalopus canus ) following SACC (2005).
Formerly treated as a subspecies of Magellanic Tapaculo (Scytalopus magellanicus ), but occurs sympatrically with it at several localities in south of range.
