Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with White-lored Antpitta (Hylopezus fulviventris), but differs distinctly in voice and plumage.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- dives Salvin, 1865 - Caribbean slope from eastern Honduras south to Costa Rica.
- flammulatus Griscom, 1928 - North-western Panama (western and central Bocas del Toro).
- barbacoae Chapman, 1914 - From eastern Panama (eastern Darién) southern along Pacific slope of Colombia (south to western Nariño).
