Striped Treehunter (Thripadectes holostictus) [XC248496]
by Niels Krabbe from Pichincha: Tandayapa ridge 3 km SSW Tandayapa, Ecuador (call)

Striped Treehunter (Thripadectes holostictus) [XC273452]
by Peter Boesman from Jardin, Antioquia, Colombia (song)

Subspecies
Subspecies striatidorsus doubtfully distinguishable from nominate. Also, birds from northern Peru (Amazonas south to La Libertad, from where no specimens known until recently) are intermediate in ventral coloration and extent of streaking between nominate and moderatus, and latter exhibits increasing tendencies towards nominate in populations farther north, and significantly smaller body size in extreme south. A quantitative analysis, including specimens from intervening localities, may show that all geographical variation is clinal and that no division into subspecies is warranted.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • striatidorsus (von Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1884)   -  Western Andes of western Colombia (southern from Cauca) and western Ecuador (south to Chimborazo).
  • holostictus (Sclater & Salvin, 1876)   -  Andes of western Venezuela (south-western Táchira), Colombia (central range, and eastern range from Norte de Santander south to Cundinamarca), eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (La Libertad).
  • moderatus Zimmer, JT, 1935   -  Andes from central Peru (Huánuco) south to central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
