Subspecies
Appears to form a species group with Mato Grosso Antbird (Cercomacra melanaria), Rio Branco Antbird (Cercomacra carbonaria) and Jet Antbird (Cercomacra nigricans) on basis of plumage, vocalizations and ecology, with Manu Antbird (Cercomacra manu) probably sister to the group.
