Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Tropical Screech-Owl (Megascops choliba), but vocalizations distinct. Smaller subspecies pacificus suggested as possibly separate species. Further study is required.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • pacificus (Hekstra, 1982)   -  South-western Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru (south to Lambayeque).
  • roboratus Bangs & Noble, 1918   -  Extreme southern Ecuador and north-western Peru between western and central Andes (drainage of R Chinchipe and R Marañón).
