Proposed subspecies chlorura is synonym of eucharis; boliviana is synonym of nominate.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

• gouldii (Loddiges, 1832)   -  Andes of north-eastern and south-central Colombia; old record from Venezuela (Mérida).
• gracilis (Gould, 1846)   -  Andes of Ecuador.
• pallidiventris (Simon, 1902)   -  Andes of northern Peru.
• eucharis (Bourcier and Mulsant, 1848)   -  Mountains near Huánuco (central Peru).
• nuna (Lesson, 1832)   -  Andes of south-western Peru and northern Bolivia.
• aureliae Weller & Schuchmann, 2004   -  Southern Ecuador.
• huallagae Weller & Schuchmann, 2004   -  Central Peru.
