Subspecies
Probably a sister-species of Amethyst-throated Hummingbird (Lampornis amethystinus). Hybridizes with both Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) and Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae). Differences between subspecies are weak and require more study.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

bessophilus (Oberholser, 1918) - South-western USA (south-eastern Arizona, southern New Mexico) to north-western Mexico (eastern Sonora, western Chihuahua).
clemenciae (Lesson, 1829) - Southern USA (south-western Texas) and north-east, central and southern Mexico (Sierra Madre Oriental and central plateau south to Oaxaca).
phasmorus Oberholser, 1974 - Chisos Mts. (Texas, USA).
