Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 500 m, occasionally to 900 m.

Range (Guide)

Bolivia, Brazil, Peru.

South-western Amazonia south of Amazon, from northern Peru (south of R Mara��n) and western Brazil (east to mouth of R Madeira and, farther south, to upper R Xingu), south to northern and central Bolivia (Pando, Cochabamba) and northern Mato Grosso.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Distinct from congeners, and in past occasionally isolated in monotypic genus or subgenus Beauharnaisius. Probably related to ancestor of the "Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) group", which comprises Black-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus aracari), Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis), Many-banded Aracari (Pteroglossus pluricinctus), Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) and Fiery-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii). Recent work suggests it is unlikely to be related to Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus) and Eastern Red-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus bitorquatus).

No subspecies.
