Subspecies
Named subspecies micropterus (Borneo) and microterus (Nias I) considered synonymous with grammithorax.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
grammithorax (Malherbe, 1862) - Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand south to Sumatra, including islands of Nias and Bangka, northern Natunas, and Borneo (including Banggi I and islands off north-eastern coast). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Buff-rumped Woodpecker (Meiglyptes grammithorax).
