Subspecies
Subspecies rather weakly differentiated. Venezuelan birds described as subspecies abdominalis, but considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
dignus (Sclater & Salvin, 1877) - Extreme south-western Venezuela southern in Andes to western slope in northern Ecuador.
baezae Chapman, 1923 - Eastern slope of Andes in Ecuador.
valdizani (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894) - Eastern slope of Andes in Peru.
