Proposed subspecies coryi (described from Cayman Brac, in Cayman Is) is synonymized with nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

• pusillus Swainson, 1827   -  Atlantic slope of Mexico southern locally through Central America to Colombia (west of eastern Andes, excluding Santa Marta region) and north-western and eastern Ecuador, and western Venezuela (south-western Mérida and Táchira).
• intermedius (Ridgway, 1885)   -  Cozumel I (off Quintana Roo), in eastern Mexico.
• ravidus Wetmore, 1957   -  Coiba I (off southern Veraguas), in western Panama.
• olivaceus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Cuba, I of Pines, Cayman Is, Jamaica and Hispaniola.
• bryanti (Ridgway, 1898)   -  Puerto Rico and neighbouring islands.
