Molecular-genetic data indicate that this species, Beryl-spangled Tanager (Tangara nigroviridis), Green-naped Tanager (Tangara fucosa) and Blue-and-black Tanager (Tangara vassorii) form a species group, with last-mentioned basal to the other three. Has been considered conspecific with Green-naped Tanager (Tangara fucosa), the two being similar in vocalizations, behaviour and habitat preference.
