Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. Three further proposed Mexican subspecies, suttoni (described from Río Sabinas, near Gómez Farías, in south-western Tamaulipas), russelli (from 2 km north-east of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, in Quintana Roo) and caribbaea (from Monte Bello, north of Palomares, in Oaxaca), all now subsumed into nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
hirundinacea Bonaparte, 1838 - Eastern and south-eastern Mexico (from San Luis Potosí, southern Tamaulipas, Puebla, northern Oaxaca, Chiapas and Yucatán Peninsula) south through Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and eastern Nicaragua.
gnatho (Cabanis, 1861) - North-western Nicaragua and Costa Rica (in Guanacaste, and central valley and Caribbean slope) south to western Panama (western Chiriquí).
