Subspecies
Molecular data indicate genus is closest to Hemithraupis and Chrysothlypis. May form superspecies with Sulphur-rumped Tanager (Heterospingus rubrifrons) and often considered conspecific, but differs in morphology and plumage.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

xanthopygius (Sclater, 1855) - Eastern Panama (eastern Dari�n, including Tuira valley, Cerro Pirre, Cerro Sapo, Jaqu� valley, and Serran��a de Jungurud�) and east through northern Colombia (along northern base of western and central Andes, and southern in Magdalena Valley to Antioquia).
berliozi Wetmore, 1966 - Pacific coast of Colombia (from northern Choc�) south to west-central Ecuador (Pichincha and Chimborazo).
