Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Black-throated Shrike-tanager (Lanio aurantius), and in the past often treated as conspecific.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
leucothorax Salvin, 1864 - Caribbean slope from Honduras (Olancho) south to eastern Costa Rica (south to Limón, also locally on western slope in Guanacaste).
reversus Bangs & Griscom, 1932 - Las Agujas (north-western Puntarenas), in western Costa Rica.
ictus Kennard & Peters, JL, 1927 - Lowlands and foothills around Almirante Bay (north-western Panama).
melanopygius Salvin & Godman, 1883 - Pacific slope from western Costa Rica (Puntarenas south of entrance to Gulf of Nicoya) south to western Panama (Chiriquí, both slopes in Veraguas, and foothills on Caribbean slope of western Coclé).
