Subspecies
Not obviously closely related to any other member of genus. In one study found to be very similar genetically to Kentucky Warbler (Geothlypis formosa). The two are similar also in plumage, and has been suggested that they may form a link between the two genera (which are sometimes merged). Subspecies widely separated geographically, and may be better treated as two species, with chiriquensis of Masked Yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis) (Chiriqui Yellowthroat (Geothlypis chiriquensis)) apparently another close relation.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • bairdi Ridgway, 1884   -  Eastern Honduras south, mainly on Caribbean slope, to north-western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Baird's Yellowthroat (Geothlypis bairdi).
  • semiflava Sclater, 1861   -  Pacific slope of western Colombia and western Ecuador.
  • chiriquensis Salvin, 1872   -  Southern Costa Rica and adjacent south-western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chiriqui Yellowthroat (Geothlypis chiriquensis).
