Sometimes placed in genus Atticora or, more usually, in Pygochelidon. DNA studies on this species suggest that present genus, although close to former and to Neochelidon, is distinct.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cyanoleuca (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Eastern Costa Rica and Panama (highlands), Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, and from Ecuador, northern and eastern Peru and central and north-eastern Brazil south to north-western Argentina (Tucumán), Paraguay and Uruguay.
  • peruviana (Chapman, 1922)   -  Coastal Peru.
  • patagonica (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Breeds from central Chile and central Argentina south to Tierra del Fuego; in non-breeding season northern South America (south to northern Chile and northern Argentina) and southern Central America.
