Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Superciliated Wren (Cantorchilus superciliaris), Fawn-breasted Wren (Cantorchilus guarayanus) and Long-billed Wren (Cantorchilus longirostris). Taxonomy is disputed and has variously been treated as conspecific with any one of these, or all merged as a single species. In addition, subspecies rufiventris has sometimes been treated as a full species.

The following 11 subspecies are recognised:

  • galbraithii (Lawrence, 1861)   -  Eastern Panama (eastern from Canal Zone) and north-western Colombia (Chocó, northern Antioquia).
  • conditus (Bangs, 1903)   -  Coiba I and Pearl Is (Rey, San Miguel, Viveros), off southern Panama.
  • leucotis (Lafresnaye, 1845)   -  Northern Colombia from R Sinu east to Santa Marta, and southern into Magdalena Valley.
  • collinus (Wetmore, 1946)   -  Serraní­a de Macuira, in northern Guajira (northern Colombia).
  • venezuelanus (Cabanis, 1850)   -  Northern Colombia (eastern Santa Marta, plains of Guajira) and north-western Venezuela (northern and eastern Zulia east to Yaracuy, Cojedes and Aragua, south to Barinas).
  • zuliensis (Hellmayr, 1934)   -  North-western Venezuela (western Zulia south to north-western Táchira and western Mérida) and adjacent Colombia (Norte de Santander).
  • hypoleucus (von Berlepsch & Hartert, 1901)   -  North-central Venezuela (northern Apure, Guárico, southern Anzoátegui, northern Bolí­var).
  • albipectus (Cabanis, 1849)   -  North-eastern Venezuela (south-eastern Monagas south to northern and eastern Bolí­var), the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (eastern Amazonas east to northern Maranhío, south to northern Mato Grosso).
  • bogotensis (Hellmayr, 1901)   -  Eastern Colombia and central Venezuela (southern Táchira and extreme south-western Barinas east to western Bolí­var and Amazonas).
  • peruanus (Hellmayr, 1921)   -  Lowlands of eastern Ecuador, south-eastern Colombia, eastern Peru (south to Juní­n) and western Brazil (Amazonas).
  • rufiventris (Sclater, PL, 1870)   -  East-central Brazil (Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais) south to extreme eastern Paraguay.
