Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From 600 - 3,250 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Proposed taxon fumosus apparently based on hybrid between present species and Black-headed Nightingale-Thrush (Catharus mexicanus). Racial affiliation of population recently discovered in central Andes of Colombia not determined.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • hellmayri von Berlepsch, 1902   -  Costa Rica and western Panama.
  • mirabilis Nelson, 1912   -  Eastern Panama.
  • fuscater (Lafresnaye, 1845)   -  Eastern Panama (eastern Darién), Colombia south to western Ecuador, and western Venezuela.
  • sanctaemartae Ridgway, 1904   -  Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
  • opertaneus Wetmore, 1955   -  Western Colombia (northern part of western Andes).
  • caniceps Chapman, 1924   -  North-western and central Peru, probably also south-western Ecuador.
  • mentalis Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876   -  South-eastern Peru and north-western Bolivia.
