Subspecies
Finer details of plumage suggest that this species is most closely related to Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner (Philydor erythrocercum), and was formerly treated as conspecific. Considered by some authors to be closer to Cinnamon-rumped Foliage-gleaner (Philydor pyrrhodes) because of overall plumage similarities. Subspecies erythronotum has sometimes been treated as a separate species. Disjunct population in western Ecuador probably represents an undescribed taxon.

Proposed subspecies fulvescens, described from a single specimen from northern Colombia, represents a plumage of nominate subspecies. Species name often spelt "fuscipennis", but must agree with neuter gender of genus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • fuscipenne Salvin, 1866   -  Central Panama (Veraguas, Coclé, eastern Colón, Canal area).
  • erythronotum Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1873   -  Eastern Panama (eastern from eastern San Blas and eastern Panamá) to northern and south-western Colombia (east to northern Santander and northern Caldas, south to Chocó; Nariño) and western Ecuador (southern Pichincha south to El Oro and north-western Azuay).
