Included in genus Philydor by some authors. Vocal differences accompanied by marked plumage differences between trans-Andean and cis-Andean populations indicate that two species are almost certainly involved.

  • virgatus (Lawrence, 1867)   -  Costa Rica and western Panama (east to Veraguas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Woodhaunter (Automolus virgatus).
  • assimilis (Berlepsch and Taczanowski, 1884)   -  Eastern Panama (western from eastern Colon) and western Colombia south to western Ecuador (south to north-western Azuay and El Oro). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Western Woodhaunter (Automolus virgatus).
  • cordobae Meyer de Schauensee, 1960   -  North-western Colombia (Antioquia, southern Córdoba, and southern in Magdalena Valley to Boyacá). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Western Woodhaunter (Automolus virgatus).
