Subspecies
Relationships of genus unclear. Plumage, nest architecture and placement, and voice suggest possible relationship to Acrobatornis. Sometimes treated as forming a superspecies with Equatorial Greytail (Xenerpestes singularis), the two differing in elevational distribution.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • umbraticus Wetmore, 1951   -  Eastern Panama (Darién), western Colombia (Caribbean lowlands east to R Sinu, and Pacific lowlands) and north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas, north-western Pichincha).
  • minlosi Berlepsch, 1886   -  Caribbean lowlands of Colombia east to middle Magdalena Valley (north-western Santander, western Boyacá).
