Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Traditionally placed in present location in taxonomic sequence, but perhaps related to large Myrmeciza species (e.g. Plumbeous Antbird (Myrmelastes hyperythrus)). Further study isrequired. Some subspecies may prove to reflect no more than clinal variation.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
chiroleuca Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1869 - Caribbean slope from southern Belize, Guatemala and Honduras south to western Panama (Bocas del Toro); recently reported from extreme south-eastern Mexico (Yaxchilán).
erratilis Bangs, 1907 - Pacific slope of Costa Rica (Puntarenas, San José) and western Panama (Chiriquí).
nudiceps (Cassin, 1850) - Eastern Panama (eastern from Coclé and Panamá) and Pacific slope in north-western Colombia (Chocó, Valle del Cauca).
sanctamartae Ridgway, 1908 - Northern Colombia (Córdoba and northern Antioquia east to Magdalena and southern César, also extreme eastern La Guajira).
