Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland, dry and swamp forest. From sea-level - 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies portovelae sometimes lumped with nominate because of similarities in plumage and poorly defined geographical boundaries between the two.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • atricaudus Lawrence, 1863   -  South-western Costa Rica south to western Colombia.
  • modestus Todd, 1912   -  Locally in central and eastern Venezuela (northern Bolí­var).
  • portovelae Chapman, 1924   -  Western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • adjacens Zimmer, JT, 1939   -  Southern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil south of Amazon.
  • connectens Zimmer, JT, 1939   -  North-central and north-eastern Brazil south of Amazon.
  • snethlagei Hellmayr, 1927   -  Coastal north-eastern Brazil.
  • ridgwayi von Berlepsch, 1888   -  South-eastern Brazil.
