Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,450 m.

Range (Guide)

Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.

Southern Mexico south to western Panama (possibly in Bocas del Toro and northern Veraguas).

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Has been suggested by some authors that genus be joined with closely affiliated Hemitriccus or Lophotriccus. However, bill morphology and peculiar voice viewed by others as sufficiently distinct to support retention of separate genus. Forms a superspecies with Southern Bentbill (Oncostoma olivaceum), and sometimes considered conspecific. Distribution somewhat uncertain.
