Pelagic, usually well offshore except when near colonies.
Chile (B), Colombia, Ecuador (B), Mexico, Peru (B).

Estimated population is 500,000 (2010).

Food
Small fish, squid, crustaceans, caught on the wing by pattering and dipping, or by surface-seizing while sitting on the water. Feeds mainly at night.

In rock crevices or under vegetation on cliffs or lava fields. In colonies.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
tethys (Bonaparte, 1852) - Galapagos Is.
kelsalli (Lowe, 1925) - Pescadores and San Gallán Is, off western Peru.
