Vagrant to Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
Population
Estimated population is 200,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Closely allied to Orange-breasted Falcon (Falco deiroleucus ) and Bat Falcon (Falco rufigularis ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
septentrionalis Todd, 1916 - Southern USA (Arizona, New Mexico and Texas) southern locally through Mexico to Guatemala.
femoralis Temminck, 1822 - Nicaragua and Belize through Panama to Colombia, east to the Guianas, and south through eastern Bolivia and Brazil to Argentina, extending south to Tierra del Fuego.
pichinchae Chapman, 1925 - Temperate zones of south-western Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and western Bolivia south to northern Chile and north-western Argentina (Tucumán).
