Subspecies
Allied to Buteogallus and Parabuteo.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nigricollis (Latham, 1790) - Central Mexico (Sinaloa and Veracruz) south through Central America to Amazonia, west to eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru, east to the Guianas and Trinidad, and south through eastern Bolivia to southern Brazil.
leucocephalus (Vieillot, 1816) - Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina (south to Salta, Santa Fe and Corrientes).
