Western Panama (Chiriquí) through tropical South America west of Andes to north-western Peru, and east of Andes east to the Guianas and Trinidad, and south through Ecuador, eastern Peru, eastern Bolivia and Brazil to northern Argentina (Tucumán, Córdoba and Santa Fe).

Subspecies
Often placed in monotypic genus Heterospizias, mainly due to longer legs and wings. Population of Paraguay, south-eastern Brazil and Argentina has been awarded separate subspecies, rufulus, but differs only in size, and not generally considered valid. Birds of Argentina have alternatively been in equally dubious subspecies australis.
