Habitat
Inland wetlands. From sea-level - 800 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.
Eastern Colombia east to the Guianas and south to north-eastern Peru and on to central Argentina (Buenos Aires).
 
Population
Estimated population is 25,000 - 100,000 (2010).

Forms superspecies with Little Tern (Sternula albifrons ), Saunders's Tern (Sternula saundersi ), Least Tern (Sternula antillarum ) and Peruvian Tern (Sternula lorata ).
