Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 900 - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Purple-winged Ground-dove (Claravis geoffroyi). Some subspecies described from very small samples, and supposed differences may be due to individual, not subspecific, variation. Birds of northern and central Peru may be more properly ascribed to nominate subspecies, but in any case subspecies inca appears doubtfully valid.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

ochoterena (Bonaparte, 1856) - South-eastern Mexico, from mountains of Veracruz to southern Chiapas.
salvini Griscom, 1930 - Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
umbrina Griscom, 1930 - Costa Rica.
pulchra Griscom, 1930 - Western Panama.
mondetoura (Bonaparte, 1856) - Northern and western Venezuela, Colombia on both slopes of Andes, and eastern Ecuador.
inca van Rossem, 1934 - Peru and west-central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
