Subspecies
Forms a species group with Plumbeous Pigeon (Patagioenas plumbea), Short-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas nigrirostris) and Short-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas nigrirostris) and all species have very similar songs distinct from other New World Columba. Sometimes placed in a subgenus Oenoenas. Some taxonomic confusion with Plumbeous Pigeon (Patagioenas plumbea) in past. Subspecies berlepshi and purpureotincta have both been considered distinct species. Three further subspecies (ruberrima, anolaimae, ogilviegranti) sometimes recognized for local populations in Colombia.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • subvinacea (Lawrence, 1868)   -  Subtropical zone of Costa Rica and Panama.
  • berlepschi (Hartert, 1898)   -  Pacific coast from south-eastern Panama to south-western Ecuador.

  • bogotensis (Berlepsch and Leverkühn, 1890)   -  Northern end of western Andes of Colombia south to Amazonian Brazil and northern and eastern Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Plumbeous Pigeon (Patagioenas plumbea).
  • ruberrima (Meyer de Schauensee, 1950)   -  North-western Colombia (Sinú Valley).
  • anolaimae (Chubb, C, 1917)   -  Central Colombia.
