Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Abeillia. Closely related to Stephanoxis. Nominate and subspecies pallidiventris intergrade in south-eastern Ecuador.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

merrittii (Lawrence, 1861) - Eastern Honduras to eastern Panama.
guimeti (Bourcier, 1843) - Northern and western Venezuela through eastern Colombia and Ecuador to extreme northern and north-eastern Peru and extreme north-western and northern Brazil.
pallidiventris Stolzmann, 1926 - Eastern Peru and west-central Bolivia.
