Recently suggested that nominate subspecies be merged with subspecies aphanes of Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi) (as subspecies andrei) and that meridionalis thus be given separate specific status. Several specimens formerly identified as andrei (e.g. from Carabobo, Falcon, Lara, Distrito Federal) are clearly subspecies aphanes of Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi), and of the 5 valid specimens of andrei 4 are from Bolívar (2 each from Caicara and Altagracia) and 1 from Sucre (San Félix); those birds mislabelled as andrei may either be post-breeding migrants of a Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi) population, perhaps from eastern part of Coastal Range, or may represent a resident form from hilly lowlands of southern Venezuela; identification of 2 other specimens taken from near the Serranía de Imataca, south of Orinoco Delta, needs to be confirmed. Subspecies meridionalis almost identical in plumage to Chimney Swift (Chaetura pelagica), to which it may be closely related.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• andrei von Berlepsch and Hartert, 1902   -  Eastern Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi).
• meridionalis Hellmayr, 1907   -  Colombia to the Guianas, Brazil, northern Paraguay and north-western Argentina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Swift (Chaetura meridionalis).
• aphanes Wetmore & Phelps Jr, 1956   -  Eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil (northern Amapá). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi).
