Subspecies
Closely related to American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea). Birds from western Colombia and western Ecuador described as subspeciesw chocoensis on basis of amount of buffy spotting on wing-coverts and tail, but this character seems too variable to be useful for subspecific differentiation.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
inda (Linnaeus, 1766) - South-eastern Nicaragua to northern Bolivia, eastern Paraguay and southern Brazil.
chocoensis Todd, 1943 - Western Colombia, north-western Ecuador.
