Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-tailed Jacamar (Galbula galbula), Coppery-chested Jacamar (Galbula pastazae), White-chinned Jacamar (Galbula tombacea) and Bluish-fronted Jacamar (Galbula cyanescens). Subspecies rufoviridis (with heterogyna) geographically separated from other subspecies by Green-tailed Jacamar (Galbula galbula), White-chinned Jacamar (Galbula tombacea) and Bluish-fronted Jacamar (Galbula cyanescens), and long regarded as a full species. Given its phenotypic similarity to other forms of present species, however, probably best treated as conspecific, pending further research. Subspecies melanogenia previously considered a separate species, but this treatment confounded by limited hybridization with nominate subspecies around Gulf of UrabíƒÂ¡, north-western Colombia. Ecuadorian and Colombian individuals tend towards smaller size and darker coloration, but differences considered insufficient for recognition of additional geographical subspecies. Subspecies heterogyna, pallens and brevirostris may form parts of clinal variation, as differences in coloration are minor.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • melanogenia Sclater, PL, 1852   -  Eastern Mexico (Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas) south to western Andes of Colombia and Ecuador.
  • pallens Bangs, 1898   -  Extreme northern Colombia (Santa Marta, lower Magdalena Valley) and extreme north-western Venezuela (Zulia).
  • brevirostris Cory, 1913   -  Northern Colombia (Norte de Santander) and north-western Venezuela (around head of L Maracaibo).
  • ruficauda Cuvier, 1816   -  Central Colombia (Magdalena Valley north of Cauca, Arauca, Casanare), Venezuela (except north-western and south), Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana (and very scarce east to coastal French Guiana), and northern Brazil (upper R Branco, in Roraima).
  • rufoviridis Cabanis, 1851   -  Much of Brazil south of Amazon and east of R Madeira, and northern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz); records from Paraguay and Argentina unconfirmed.
  • heterogyna Todd, 1932   -  Eastern Bolivia (Beni, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz) and south-central Brazil (western Mato Grosso).
