Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-browed Woodpecker (Piculus aurulentus). Specific name sometimes misspelt as chrysochlorus. Racial differentiation partly obscured by considerable individual variation; birds in southern Colombia (Putumayo) and north-eastern Ecuador lacking red malar stripe may possibly represent a new, as yet unnamed subspecies. Further study is needed, possibly also taxonomic revision.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • aurosus (Nelson, 1912)   -  Eastern Panama.
  • xanthochlorus (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1875)   -  Northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
  • capistratus (Malherbe, 1862)   -  South-eastern Colombia and north-western Brazil east to Surinam.
  • guianensis Todd, 1937   -  French Guiana.
  • paraensis (Snethlage, E, 1907)   -  North-eastern Brazil.
  • laemostictus Todd, 1937   -  North-western Brazil.
  • hypochryseus Todd, 1937   -  Western Brazil south to northern Bolivia.
  • chrysochloros (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Central and southern Brazil south to eastern Bolivia, western Paraguay and northern Argentina (Formosa south to Santa Fe).
  • polyzonus (Valenciennes, 1826)   -  South-eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro).
