Habitat
Humid forests. From 1,050 - 1,450 m.
Colombia (B), Panama (B).
Endemic to extreme eastern Panama and adjacent Chocó, north-western Colombia.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Hunting for food, and habitat clearance and degradation resulting from mining, agriculture, cultivation of coca and subsistence are the main threats.

Subspecies
May be conspecific with Venezuelan Wood-Quail (Odontophorus columbianus ), Black-fronted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus atrifrons ), Black-breasted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus leucolaemus ) and Gorgeted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus strophium ). Probably most closely related to Gorgeted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus strophium ).
No subspecies.
