Subspecies
Often considered to include Black-eared Wood-Quail (Odontophorus melanotis). May be conspecific with Rufous-breasted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus speciosus), Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus) and Dark-backed Wood-Quail (Odontophorus melanonotus). At other extreme, subspecies parambae has been considered distinct species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

parambae Rothschild, 1897 - Pacific slope of Colombia south to western Ecuador; possibly also eastern Panama.
erythrops Gould, 1859 - South-western Ecuador.
