Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Eastern Cameroon east to southern Sudan, western and central Kenya and south to Angola, north-western Botswana and northern and western Zambia.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2011).

Voice
A harsh 'kwit, kwit, kwit', alarm call. Song is a liquid 'sweet sweet sweet-potato'.

Subspecies
Not recognised as a species by BirdLife International. Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus), Somali Bulbul (Pycnonotus somaliensis), Dodson's Bulbul (Pycnonotus dodsoni) and Dark-capped Bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Pycnonotus barbatus following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • spurius Reichenow, 1905   -  Southern Ethiopia (southern Bale south to northern Sidamo-Borama). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus).
  • layardi Gurney Sr, 1879   -  South-eastern Kenya (Taveta) and eastern Tanzania (including Zanzibar) south to eastern and southern Zambia, north-eastern Botswana and eastern South Africa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus).
  • tricolor (Hartlaub, 1862)   -  Central, eastern, south-eastern. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus).
