Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status NR
Habitat destruction due to logging and agricultural encroachment are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Abyssinian Ground-thrush (Geokichla piaggiae) and Kivu Ground-thrush (Zoothera tanganjicae) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include tanganjicae as a subspecies of Abyssinian Ground-thrush (Geokichla piaggiae).
