Subspecies
Morphological, vocal and molecular studies indicate that, with exception of Narrow-billed Antwren (Formicivora iheringi), all species placed in current genus form a well-defined group. Considered to form a clade with Serra Antwren (Formicivora serrana) and Restinga Antwren (Formicivora littoralis), and all three have sometimes been treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bahiae Hellmayr, 1909 - North-eastern Brazil (extreme eastern Maranhío east to western Rio Grande do Norte, south to northern Bahia and western Pernambuco).
melanogaster Pelzeln, 1868 - Central Brazil (southern Mato Grosso east to southern Bahia, south to western Mato Grosso do Sul, western Sío Paulo and northern Minas Gerias), south-eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, Tarija) and extreme northern Paraguay (Alto Paraguay).
