Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-shouldered Antshrike (Thamnophilus aethiops). Re-examination of subspecies needed. Nominate and grandior possibly intergrade in south-western Colombia (Nariño). The original description of male caudatus may have been based on subadult specimen.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
grandior Hellmayr, 1924 - Colombia (locally on all Andean slopes) and eastern slope in Ecuador and northern Peru (south to northern San Martín).
unicolor (Sclater, 1859) - Pacific slope in Ecuador.
caudatus Carriker, 1933 - Eastern Andean slope in central Peru (southern San Martín south, locally, to Cuzco).
