Subspecies
Despite some areas of overlap, may be regarded as forming superspecies with Chimango Caracara (Phalcoboenus chimango).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cordata Bangs and Penard, TE, 1918 - Southern Costa Rica and Panama (including Pearl Is) through Colombia to the Guianas and Trinidad and southern (east of Andes) to Amazon.
chimachima (Vieillot, 1816) - Eastern Bolivia and Brazil south of Amazon to Paraguay, northern Argentina and Uruguay.
