Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima). Formerly considered conspecific with Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
ptilocnemis (Coues, 1873) - St Matthew and Hall Is and Pribilof Is. Winters on Alaska Peninsula.
quarta (Hartert, 1920) - Kuril Is, southern Kamchatka and Commander Is.
tschuktschorum (Portenko, 1937) - Eastern Chukotskiy Peninsula, St Lawrence I, Nunivak I and western Alaska. Winters in north-western North America and locally in eastern Japan.
couesi (Ridgway, 1880) - Aleutian Is and Alaska Peninsula.
