Subspecies
Pyrrhura leucotis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis), Grey-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus) and Goias Parakeet (Pyrrhura pfrimeri) following SACC (2005).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Subtly different from White-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis) and Goias Parakeet (Pyrrhura pfrimeri), having a brown pileum, a white auricular patch and a grey breast. Its coloration, especially the breast, resembles two widely disjunct taxa, caeruleiceps (Venezuela) and eisenmanni (Panama) of Painted Parakeet (Pyrrhura picta). Nevertheless, Grey-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura griseipectus) differs from caeruleiceps and eisenmanni in its all-brown pileum (fore- and hindcrown blue in caeruleiceps, forecrown dull red in eisenmanni), maroon cheeks (dull red in caeruleiceps and eisenmanni) and red shoulders.
