Pseph-ö'-tus - Gk, inlaid with pebbles: hae'-mat-o-nöt'-us - Gk, haima (haimatos), blood; Gk, noton, back

Habitat
Open, grassy, lightly timbered plains, timbered watercourses, mallee, farmlands, usualy in small groups, feeding on the ground.

Food
Seeds and leaves of grasses and other plants. Also fruits and flowers.

Voice
A sharp, metallic, scratchy, squeaky, abrupt, 'chwie-chwiep, chwie-chwiep'. A long, squeaked, 'chwieee'. Also a lower, husky, harsh, 'chwier-querrk'.

Nest
In a hollow of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 7, usually 4 or 5; white; rounded; 22 - 24 x 19 mm. Incubation: about 20 days; by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 4 - 5 weeks.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • haematonotus (Gould, 1838)   -  South-eastern Australia.
  • caeruleus Condon, 1941   -  L Eyre region of South Australia and adjacent extreme south-western Queensland.


Similar Species
Mulga Parrot (Psephotellus varius) which have varying yellow forehead band, a varying red patch on the nape, and a contrasting lighter green band across the upper rump.
