Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-billed Jacamar (Galbula albirostris) and sometimes considered conspecific, but no intergradation observed in zone of potential sympatry in R Ucayali Valley, north-eastern Peru, and their populations are otherwise separated by R Amazon almost throughout its length. Considerable geographical variation in plumage characters. Upper Amazonian subpopulation possibly a separate subspecies, or even distinct species.
